In a world that often prioritizes self-interest and self-service, Christians are called to focus on others more than ourselves. Service isn’t only an obligation or a box to check, it’s an expression of our faith and a way to show the love of Jesus to others. When we serve, we look like Christ, who came “not to be served, but to serve, and to give [His] life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28). We are called to serve one another inside the body, and we are also called to serve those outside the body, who need to see Christ and hear the Gospel message.
Service Inside the Church: Within the church, service builds community and strengthens our bonds as the body of Christ.
The Apostle Paul reminds us that “there are different kinds of service, but the same Lord” (1 Corinthians 12:5). Each of us has unique gifts and talents, and when we use them in service to one another, we create a joyful and high-functioning church family. Whether it’s teaching a Sunday school class, volunteering for a ministry, or simply offering a listening ear, every act of service contributes to the spiritual growth and well-being of our congregation.
Service within the church also allows us to practice humility and obedience. As we serve others, we follow the example of Jesus, who washed His disciples’ feet to teach them the importance of serving one another (John 13:14-15). In doing so, we show a heart of compassion and empathy, which are essential to a growing congregation.
Service Outside the Church: Our service should not be confined to the walls of the church. Jesus called us to “go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15). This Great Commission extends beyond words; it’s about living out our faith through acts of kindness, justice, and mercy in our communities and the wider world. When we serve those in need, we demonstrate the love of Christ in a way that words alone cannot convey. Jesus and his apostles didn’t only preach to Gentiles and unbelievers; they ate with them, healed them, and spent time loving them.
James 2:17 reminds us that “faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” Our faith comes alive when we serve others, showing that we are not only hearers of the Word but doers as well. Whether it’s feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, or advocating for someone in need, our service is a powerful testimony to the transforming power of God’s love.
A culture of service is vital both within the church and in the world. It allows us to live out our faith, reflect Christ’s love, and fulfill our mission as His disciples. Let’s commit to serving one another and our communities, so that through our actions, others may see Jesus and be drawn to His saving grace, glorifying almighty God in the process!
