Draw Near to Him

Draw Near to Him

Luke 5:16 “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely  places and prayed.”

It’s only nine words in length.  But, the depth of that verse is immeasurable.

At first glance, this verse seems simple—merely a fact about Jesus’ habits. But there is far more to it. In the grind of our daily lives, Jesus models for us the need of intentional daily solitude and prayer. His example is not just for first-century disciples but for every believer today.

There are three things we see in this potent verse:

  1. The Importance of Withdrawal.  Despite His demanding ministry, Jesus made it a priority to withdraw from the crowds. He didn’t allow the urgent needs of the people or the pressures of leadership to crowd out His need for communion with His Father. In our own lives, we often find ourselves overwhelmed by responsibilities, expectations, and noise—both external and internal. Jesus’ habit of withdrawal challenges us to pause, to step back, and seek the quiet places where God’s voice can be best heard.
  2. The Power of Solitude.  Withdrawing to lonely places is not about isolation for its own sake, but about disconnecting for re-connection. It is here, in the stillness, that we can be honest about our fears, hopes, and struggles. Solitude becomes the fertile ground where God’s Word takes root and transforms us from within. When we follow Jesus’ example, we discover that these moments of quiet are not empty at all, but overflow with the permeating presence of God.
  3. 3. The Necessity of Prayer. Prayer is our time with God. Jesus did not pray out of duty, but out of deep, abiding love for the Father. His prayers were conversations—intimate, honest, and ongoing. When we pray, we are not merely reciting words or presenting requests; we are entering into a relationship. Prayer is where we learn to listen as well as speak, to wait as well as act.

Luke 5:16 does more than tell us about Jesus.  It is an invitation to each of us. In a world that values productivity and busyness, Jesus calls us to a different rhythm. When we withdraw to pray, we are not neglecting our responsibilities; we are ensuring that we are rooted in the Source of all strength and wisdom. As a tree draws nourishment from hidden roots, so we draw life from our hidden times with God.

If you long for a deeper relationship with God, consider following Jesus’ example. Set aside time each day to withdraw and pray. It does not have to be long or complicated—just intentional. As you do, you will find your heart refreshed, your perspective renewed, and your love for God growing deeper.

Jesus shows us that a vibrant relationship with God is nurtured in the quiet, prayerful moments away from the crowd. May we each find the courage to follow His powerful example:  To withdraw, to pray, and to deepen our relationship with the One who loves us beyond measure.
