Fleeting Perspective

Fleeting Perspective

There are many events in life we quickly forget, and others we never will. Your baptism, wedding, graduation, the death of a loved one, a job change… these are moments that tend to stay with us for a lifetime, or at least for a long time.

From my own recent experience, I’ve noticed that when these significant moments happen, whether good or bad, we are blessed with a brief moment of true perspective about the world around us. For a short time, we are given a window into the way things really are before that window becomes clouded again by the smaller, more urgent distractions of everyday life.

When we get married, we are presented with the beauty of a shared life and see how truly important our spouse is. When we lose a loved one, we gain a moment of perspective on the value of life and relationships, but that clarity fades as the days pass. Even at our baptism, we may see more clearly than ever the eternal nature of our souls and the urgency of doing the work of the kingdom, but even that sharp perspective can dull as sin and lesser things creep back into view.

Even Christ’s own disciples struggled with this. They literally walked with Him, heard His teaching, and witnessed His miracles, yet their   perspective sometimes faltered. In Acts 10, Peter received a vision from God that challenged his understanding of spiritual purity. At first, he resisted what God was showing him, but through the Spirit’s guidance, he came to see that the gospel was for all people, not just the Jews. God used that moment to give Peter a clearer vision of His purpose and his grace.

I thank God for the grace He gives us when we fail to see things as clearly as He does. And I pray that I might offer that same grace to others whose vision has been clouded by the weight of this world.

When we are given those rare moments of clarity, we should hold onto them as long as possible. Let them remind us of what truly matters.  And look forward to the day when our perspective will no longer fade, when we will see completely and clearly, unburdened by the sin and distractions of this world. What an amazing day that will be!
