Jesus Gained a Soul

Jesus Gained a Soul

Oh, they baptized Jesse Taylor in Cedar Creek last Sunday. Jesus gained a soul and Satan lost a good right arm…

That’s the beginning of the chorus of the song The Baptism of Jesse Taylor. The song has been recorded by lots of gospel and/or country artists. It tells the story of a really rough character – Jesse Taylor. He’s the drinkin’, fightin’, cheatin’, gamblin’ terror of the town. Until. Until he was baptized. Then “Jesus gained a soul and Satan lost a good right arm.”

I heard that song on the radio the other day and began to think about how many souls “Jesus has gained” through the ministry of Know Your Bible. While we know some personally, and receive word of others from congregations far and wide, the truth is that we really have no idea. I’m sure the number is a lot bigger than we can imagine. But, we don’t need to know the TOTAL because according to Jesus, there is rejoicing in heaven over ONE sinner who repents. (Luke 15:7)

We recently heard about ONE more of those souls Jesus gained. Pictured are David Spillman and Kevin C. David is the minister of the Church of Christ Northwest in Peoria, IL, and Kevin is a KYB Bible   Correspondence Course student. The picture shows Kevin a few seconds before the angels started rejoicing.

And we rejoice with them! The next line of the song’s chorus is “They all cried hallelujah when Jesse’s head went under…” We haven’t met Kevin yet, and likely won’t in this life, but won’t you add your hallelujah that he has joined the Kingdom?
