Northside Singers

Northside Singers

At the typical Northside wedding or funeral, there are people in the audience who are non-members. Some belong to a different church of Christ, but many are members of other religious groups or they have no religious affiliation, and they aren’t familiar with our music.

At those events, if the Northside Singers provide the music, it’s fun to watch the faces of guests who aren’t used to a cappella singing, and it’s interesting to hear their comments. It’s not uncommon for a guest to say something like, “Wow! I didn’t know singing without instruments could be that good!”

On a side note, it always humors me when someone learns I’m a member of the church of Christ and they say, “Oh, you’re the people who don’t believe in music!” My response is always kind, but clear: “No, we DO believe in music! We LOVE music! We just don’t use instruments.”

The Northside Singers have a long tradition of providing music for funerals, weddings, and special events. For example, they have sung at three different Women Walking with God conferences.

The group is co-directed by Karen Wagner and Archie Mauck. Most of the time there are 2-3 singers on each part, or 8-12 total.

If you have experience singing in a musical group and know how to read music, Karen and Archie would love to have you consider singing with the group. Those who join our ranks need to be able to follow a director and sing on pitch. The group uses microphones, so you don’t need a loud voice, but you do need to be able to blend.

Those considering joining the Northside Singers need to be aware that being a part of the group is a big responsibility. Singers usually rehearse five or six times for a wedding or special event, and they always get together to practice before a funeral. The group usually performs music it already knows, but they are frequently called on to learn new music, too. Since funerals are normally held on weekdays, singing at a funeral usually requires taking time off from work or other responsibilities.

The Northside Singers consider their work to be a ministry, so they are usually not compensated for their time and effort, but instead are honored to be able to use their God-given singing talents as a way to serve others.

Please talk to Karen or Archie if you are interested in being a part of the Northside Singers.
