Teacher Appreciation and Wednesday Evenings (Nov-Jan)

Adult Teacher Appreciation

When Sonny Banning served as Adult Education Coordinator, we sometimes joked about how potential teachers avoided him! And now, some Northside men treat me the same way. We are blessed with many good Bible class teachers, and I want to thank them in this space.

Northside supports our teachers in various ways. We have substitute teachers to cover absences, we offer supplemental materials, we have TV screens in each classroom for PowerPoint slides, and we avoid scheduling teachers too frequently. But when you agree to teach a Bible class at Northside, our expectations are high.

“Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.  We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.”    (James 3.1-2)

Northside Bible teachers work hard to meet this standard: (1) Adherence to scripture, (2) Preparation each week, (3) Good presentation of God’s Word, (4) Improvement from one year to the next, and (5) Unscheduled teacher assessments in each quarter.

When you are blessed by a Bible class at Northside, please encourage and thank your teacher. If you have suggestions or criticisms, share them with your teacher or bring them directly to me as appropriate. And, if you’re looking for an opportunity to teach an adult  Bible class, let’s talk about it.

How To Study the Bible & How To Teach It (Sonny Banning, Wednesday evenings, starting November 12)

During the time of Jesus, less than 10% of people could read. That percentage did not change much for 1,400 years, even though  Johannes Gutenberg, a German goldsmith, designed a machine capable of producing pages of text at an incredible speed. By the late 1700s, more than 70% of people in Europe and the colonies could read, and the Bible became, and remains, the most sought-after book.

In this class, we will explore the purpose, inspiration, and history of the Bible; the structure and content of the Bible; various translations of the Bible; and proliferation of the Bible to all the world. We will also learn different ways to study the Bible and consider different methods to teach the Bible to both young and old.

Handouts will be available and we will attempt to answer questions you may have. Come as we explore one of God’s greatest blessings to modern mankind … His printed word.
