Some Bible verses are just unrealistic. For instance, Colossians 3:17 says, “And whatever you do, whether
in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Can you
believe it? In whatever you do – give thanks. How impossible would that be? If I took that seriously……
When I walked into the church building, I’d be thankful that Darlan Mahan had it clean, and that Ernie
Stephens had the doors unlocked and everything ready. When I watched the kids heading to class, I’d have to
pause and be thankful that so many teachers were prepared, that Anita Weathers had the supply room ready for them, that the
Committee had selected a great new curriculum. When I heard the Know Your Bible phones ring, I’d thank God for Glenda
McKinley coordinating all the phone operators, and for all the operators being someone’s first contact with a church member.
When I passed the KYB room, I’d be thankful for the 50+ graders being ministers of Christ to their students. When I saw the list
of questions that were called in, I’d thank the Lord for Toby and Jeff’s ability to answer those questions on the air with Biblical
truth delivered in love. I’d thank God for the supporters of KYB – especially the brethren in Burlington, Iowa, Springfield,
Missouri, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota who partner with us in grading courses and representing KYB in their areas. When I sat
in the auditorium, I’d be thankful for the heritage I saw around the wealth of talent that the Lord has assembled in one place.
When I looked down at the youth group packed together on the front rows, I’d have to thank God for the abilities and potential
that will lead the church in the future. I’d give a special thanks for Him sending Jeff and Ginny Martin to help develop that
potential in our youth.
When I pillowed my head every night, I’d have to remember to thank the Lord for all the wonderful things that happen at
Northside that I don’t even know about. How, or when, or by whom – I don’t know – but I’m thankful.
And then, I guess I’d be thankful for Colossians 3:17, and try to practice Paul’s advice more often.
