Why Foreign Missions?

Why Foreign Missions?

Have you ever wondered why we send missionaries to other countries when there are so many people who still need to be reached here?

I believe there are three main reasons we should support foreign missions.

The first is that Christ commanded it. In Mark 16:15, Jesus commanded his disciples to “go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.” He also told them that they would be his “witnesses, telling people about [him] everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

Whether we understand the reason for the Great Commission or even agree with it is beside the point. Since our Lord commanded it, true Christians must follow it by going themselves or supporting those who go.

The second reason for foreign missions is that everyone desperately needs salvation. The Bible is clear that all people have sinned, are lost, and need to be saved. The good news, as Paul explained in Romans 10:13, is that “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” But, as he goes on to ask in the following verses, “How can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent?

The third reason for foreign missions is that only Jesus Christ can meet the need each person has for salvation. “He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world” (1 John 2:2).” And, as Jesus pointed out in John 14:6,  “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father except through me.”

Since there is no other God, no other Savior, and no other way of salvation, it is urgent that we do all we can to tell people everywhere about forgiveness and eternal life.

Northside’s annual Missions Sunday is April 28. I hope you’ll join us for an update on the work our missionaries are doing. And I pray you’ll be moved to support them financially as they spread the good news of Jesus throughout the world.
