Time for Another Melodrama?

Time for Another Melodrama?

Since I moved back to the Wichita area, a few members have asked me, “Are we doing another melodrama?”

For those new to Northside, here’s a quick history: Back in 2013, John & Annie Downey had the idea for a Christmas potluck and asked me to oversee the entertainment. They’d seen melodramas at Cowtown and loved the family-friendly style. I agreed—and for eight years, the Northside Players put on shows like “A Cowhand’s      Christmas Carol,” “Christmas Castaways,” and “A Medieval Upheaval.”

These melodramas gave us more than entertainment—they brought us together. Folks with no stage experience worked alongside those who hadn’t acted since high school. Teens teamed up with older members.

After chatting with several Northside Players, we agreed that yes, we want another melodrama! But Christmas was already packed, so we’re exploring other times—maybe Valentine’s or summer.

Producing a play takes teamwork—people willing to learn lines, sew costumes, build sets, find props, do makeup, and handle sound, lighting, and video. Whether you love the spotlight or prefer behind-the-scenes, there’s a place for you!
